‘Last Week Tonight’ spotlights potential perils of gene editing

If you missed John Oliver's “Last Week Tonight” this past Sunday, you missed one of the best (and funniest) explanations of the gene editing revolution ushered in by the advent of CRISPR six years ago. And no, it doesn't stand for Crunchy Rectums In Sassy Pink Ray-Bans, unfortunately)

Here's video of the segment:

Oliver (who did a riotously funny stand-up gig at the Crunchies put on by TechCrunch that I attended a few years back) went for the laughs, of course, but the segment helped educate a good slice of America about the difference between somatic gene therapy and germline genetic manipulation — and the potential perils of reproductive technologies.

The show smartly featured clips of CRISPR co-discoverer Jennifer Doudna as well as a couple of examples of some of the early uses of the technology in the field, including beagles with enhanced musculature (or, Oliver said, "jacked, sexy beefcake beagles").
